Movement

Why collars should be avoided during exercise

To understand the importance of a harness, you need to take a closer look at your dog’s anatomy. The neck is one of the most sensitive areas of their body. It contains vital structures: the trachea, a fragile cartilage tube that can deform under pressure, as well as the esophagus, the thyroid gland, and major arteries and nerves that supply the head with oxygen and information. Unlike humans—whose necks are supported by strong vertical musculature—a dog’s neck directly absorbs horizontal shocks transmitted through the leash.

During every workout, these areas are stressed. An energetic dog naturally pulls forward. If this traction is applied through a collar, it concentrates on a narrow band just a few centimeters wide—significant pressure for such delicate tissues. Multiplied over hundreds of outings throughout an active dog’s life, this strain often leaves lasting marks, even if they remain invisible to the owner for years.

Risks associated with tension on a collar

Respiratory issues: repeated compression can irritate the trachea.

Endocrine stress: the thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, may become inflamed due to repeated shocks.

Muscular tension: the dog compensates by altering posture, creating imbalances in the shoulders and back.

The solution: distribute the load

A harness shifts the point of traction to the sternum (breastbone) and rib cage—two strong structures designed to protect vital organs and withstand significant pressure. By freeing the neck, you allow your dog to oxygenate their muscles optimally, improving endurance and overall comfort. You also reduce postural fatigue: a dog not pulled by the neck maintains a more balanced gait, with a stable back and freely moving shoulders.

In the long term, it’s also about prevention. Fewer chronic tensions, fewer veterinary visits for cervical or joint issues, and a companion who stays fit longer. Choosing a harness is not a minor aesthetic or practical detail, it’s a real investment in your dog’s health, on par with quality nutrition or veterinary care.

Anatomy of an Ergonomic Harness

Not all harnesses are created equal, and the difference isn’t always obvious in-store. Behind two seemingly similar models often lie very different design choices in terms of cut, materials, and padding.

To ensure your dog’s long-term joint health, you need to look beyond price and appearance. Here are the three technical criteria that truly matter, ranked by importance: cut, elbow clearance, and fabric breathability.

A. The “Y” Cut vs. the “T” Cut

This is the most important criterion—and also the easiest to check. Simply place the harness on a flat surface and observe how the straps are arranged at the front.

In a Y-shaped design, the two upper straps converge toward a single point at the sternum, forming a structure that follows the dog’s natural bone alignment.

The T-shaped design, derived from older models sometimes called “Norwegian harnesses,” places a horizontal strap across the chest. This strap runs directly through the area where the humerus rotates with each stride—precisely where maximum freedom is needed.

Y-Cut

T-Cut

Straps pass over the shoulders and meet at the sternum

Horizontal strap across the chest

Full shoulder joint freedom

Restricts front leg extension

Standard for sports (canicross, hiking, agility)

Easy to put on, but alters natural gait

Preserves shoulder cartilage over time

May cause premature cartilage wear

B. Elbow and Armpit Clearance

A harness should never rub against the back of the front legs. The skin in the armpit area is thin, lightly pigmented, and particularly sensitive to repeated friction.

On short outings, you may not notice anything. But during a 10 km canicross run or a long hike, irritation can become severe enough to force extended rest.

A well-designed model leaves at least two to three fingers’ width behind the elbow. To check this, adjust the harness while your dog is standing, then have them take a few steps. If a strap rides up and touches the armpit with each movement, the model is not suited to their body shape.

C. Materials and Breathability

During exercise, dogs generate a lot of heat, which they regulate through panting and their paw pads. Thick padding—even if comfortable at first—can act as thermal insulation and compromise this regulation, especially in summer or for dogs with dense coats.

Opt for technical materials such as mesh or neoprene, which do not retain moisture, dry quickly, and allow the skin to breathe. This design avoids compressing the lumbar vertebrae and prevents lateral pulling at each stride.

For intensive canicross, invest in a specialized model rather than adapting a general-purpose harness—the difference in comfort and energy efficiency is remarkable.

Hiking: Control and Versatility

For exploring Quebec trails, a short harness is often preferable. It’s lighter, dries quickly after rain or stream crossings, and offers better mobility on technical terrain.
The key feature is the top handle, located between the shoulder blades. It allows you to help your dog over obstacles, stabilize them on steep descents, or quickly bring them close when encountering others.

A model with multiple attachment points is ideal: you can switch between a front clip in busy areas and a back clip on quieter sections without unbalancing your dog.

Active Urban Walking: Anti-Pull Training

If your dog tends to pull or is still learning to walk at heel, a front-clip harness is an excellent training tool. Even a young, seemingly fit dog may lack the cardiovascular endurance, muscle tone, or joint resilience needed for a new activity.

The risk? Tendinitis, strains, unexplained limping that gradually sets in and requires weeks of rest. As with human athletes, gradual progression and proper warm-up make all the difference. It’s better to build fitness over months than rush into it.

The Rule of Progression

Like us, dogs can suffer from soreness, tendinitis, and accumulated fatigue. While not scientifically validated for dogs, it’s a reliable safety margin.

Watch your dog’s signals: reluctance to put on the harness, lack of enthusiasm, or lying down immediately after exercise may indicate muscle fatigue.
