Seasonal allergies in dogs and cats
Advice, Prevention and Support for Your Pet’s Seasonal Allergies
Just like humans, our four-legged friends can suffer from seasonal allergies. When spring sets in or autumn sends the leaves flying, some dogs and cats develop reactions that are sometimes discreet, sometimes highly visible, caused by pollens, moulds or other environmental allergens.
At Pitou Minou & Compagnons, we understand how difficult it can be for owners to see their pet uncomfortable, without always knowing what to do. Fortunately, with the right information, a little vigilance and the right products, it’s possible to mitigate the effects of seasonal allergies, and even prevent them.
Understanding seasonal allergies in animals
Seasonal allergies, also known as atopic dermatitis or environmental allergies, are caused by exposure to certain airborne allergens. The most common are:
- Pollen (from trees, grasses, flowers)
- Molds
- House dust mites
- Certain airborne fungi
Unlike humans, who often react with sneezing or itchy eyes, dogs and cats express their discomfort through itching and skin symptoms.

Our team knows canine and feline allergies
At Pitou Minou & Compagnons, our staff is trained to help you recognize the signs of allergies in your pet. We know how unique each case is, and we take the time to listen, observe and advise you based on your pet’s behaviour and environment.
We offer in-store:
- Skin-friendly products: hypoallergenic shampoos, fragrance-free cleansers, soothing wipes
- Foods formulated to support skin and immune system health
- Natural supplements (omega-3, oils, probiotics) to boost defences and reduce inflammation
- Collars, harnesses or clothing to protect sensitive areas
Our experts can also help you make the link between symptoms and the environment: have you noticed that your dog scratches more after a walk in the park? Or that your cat seems more agitated when the windows are open in spring? Every detail counts, and we’re here to help you interpret them.
Adapting walks during high-pollen periods
Pollen is one of the most common seasonal allergens, and our dog friends are particularly exposed to it during their daily outings. To reduce exposure, here are a few simple but effective tips:
Plan walks outside pollen peaks
Pollen levels are generally highest in the early morning and late afternoon. Prefer mid-morning or evening walks, depending on the weather.
Avoid tall grass and wooded areas during critical periods
Pollen clings easily to fur, paws and muzzle. The less your pet comes into contact with these sources, the better.
Wipe your pet down when you get home
A simple swipe with a damp wipe on paws, belly and muzzle can remove much of the accumulated allergens. We offer several gentle, safe options for this in-store use.
Keep windows closed on windy days
Especially if your pet likes to stick against the screen! Limit the entry of pollens into the indoor environment.

The importance of an appropriate diet
Diet plays a key role in an animal’s ability to resist external aggression and maintain a healthy skin barrier. At Pitou Minou & Compagnons, we offer a range of specialized foods to support allergy-sensitive cats and dogs.
Some formulas contain:
- Hydrolyzed proteins to minimize cross-reactivity
- Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to calm skin inflammation
- Vitamins and antioxidants to boost the immune system
- Prebiotic and probiotic fibres to support balanced intestinal flora (essential for immunity)
Our animal nutrition advisors can also guide you towards avoidance diets, to eliminate any doubt as to a possible food component in the allergy.
